We’re SO excited to welcome our first EVER Youth Board at Chester Zoo. This dynamic group of young people from a multitude of backgrounds, are on a mission to empower young people to take action for wildlife.

What does Chester Zoo mean to you?

Chester Zoo was my favourite childhood zoo growing up & I would drag my family the 6hr round journey to visit on my birthday most years! I remember feeling amazed at the diversity of species that it kept and always leaving slightly disappointed that I hadn’t managed to see the whole zoo in the 4 hours that we were there.

Now, as a trained wildlife conservationist & educator, my understanding of what’s most impressive about Chester Zoo is different. I love that Chester Zoo is passionate about saving species from extinction, fighting to preserve even the smallest populations from being wioed out. From the Bermuda skink to the Tequila splitfin – no species is too small to not be worth saving.

Why do you want to support our Chester Zoo Youth Board team?

Chester Zoo played a big role in nurturing my affection towards a career in wildlife conservation & I want to give back to support their mission of preventing extinction. I’m keen to use my professional experience as a secondary school Teacher to advise the zoo on the steps they can be taking to engage young people. After all, these people are going to be our next generation of wildlife conservationists, field scientists, conservation educators, political leaders and so much more… I feel it’s vital that the zoo is accessible and relevant to everyone, providing a space where they can connect with nature so that they may love the natural world and want to fight to protect it.

What do you hope to achieve from your role on the Chester Zoo’s Youth Board?

Gain further insight into how the zoo operates on a day-to-day basis as well as long-term development. It would be awesome to have some experience of working with the zoo management team to see how they manage the living collection.
